The name Merli comes from the Italian region of Lombardy, where the owner Ennio Merli, was born. Ennio grew up shadowing his grandfather as he worked on the family vineyard in the foothills of the Appenines. The name Merli translates as ‘blackbirds’. Italian roots. An Australian home. Something of both in everything we do.
The first plantings were in 1995, on a sheltered and sunny southwest slope. The vineyard is managed by the second generation, sons Jonathan and David, who both have degrees in viticulture and wine science, and extensive experience working in vineyards and wineries in Australia and overseas. Under their guidance there has been a growing emphasis on sustainable/organic viticultural and winemaking practices, and a particular focus on increasing the clonal range and volume of Pinot Noir.
From our vineyard
The vineyard consists of a number of Pinot Noir clones, including D2v5, Pommard, Abel, 777 and Mv6. They are planted at a .75 planting density which equates to over 5000 vines per hectare. The range of clones, lengthy, slow ripening and minimal intervention in the wine-making process result in wines of rich depth and intensity of flavour.

Orders are in whole cases of six bottles. As there are limited stocks available we can only fulfil orders for a minimum of 6 bottles at a time.
